Iphone 14 Performance and Battery Reviews

The iPhone 14 is a good phone, and it has a few useful upgrades over the iPhone 13. However, the number of new features is small, and this leaves the iPhone 14 in an awkward position. The iPhone 13, which came out last year and is still being sold by Apple, is very similar to the iPhone 14 but $100 cheaper. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro has a lot of new and interesting features. And the upcoming iPhone 14 Plus will have the same hardware as the iPhone 14 but a much bigger 6.7-inch screen. The Great iPhone Mini Experiment showed us that people really like big screens. The new iPhone 14 is a decent phone with a few solid upgrades from the iPhone 13, but its place in Apple’s lineup is a bit unclear. The iPhone 13, which was released last year and is still being sold by Apple, is very similar to the new iPhone 14 but $100 cheaper. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro has some interesting new features, and the upcoming iPhone 14 Plus has the same hardware as the regular iPhone 14 but with a much larger 6.7-inch screen. If the success of the iPhone 12 mini is any indication, people seem to really like big screens on their phones.

Although the iPhone 14 has some new, interesting features such as an upgraded sensor, car crash detection, and satellite SOS, it is very similar to the iPhone 13 in both appearance and design. With flat aluminum rails and roughly the same dimensions, the iPhone 14 looks almost identical to its predecessor. There are still only two rear cameras – a standard wide and ultrawide – but the camera bump is slightly larger to accommodate the bigger main sensor. This makes the iPhone 14 incompatible with cases designed for the iPhone 13. Although the iPhone 14 comes with some new and improved features like an upgraded sensor, wider aperture and autofocus on the front-facing camera, car crash detection, and satellite SOS, it’s not much different in appearance from the iPhone 13. They still have the same flat aluminum rails and are roughly the same size. There are still only two rear cameras- a standard wide and ultrawide- but the camera bump is a bit larger to accommodate the bigger main sensor. This is significant enough that an iPhone 13 case won’t fit on the iPhone 14. The iPhone 14 and 13 have more similarities than just their appearance. The 14 Pro and Pro Max have the new A16 Bionic chipset while the 14 uses the A15 Bionic–which is the same generation as the iPhone 13 reviews series. The only difference is that the 14 has one more GPU core than the 13. This is an unusual move for Apple because they typically release their newest iPhones with the newest chipsets.

Iphone 14 Performance Review

Even though the A15 processor in the iPhone 14 is still a powerful one, many people are wondering if it will be able to keep up with Apple’s iOS updates in the future. In previous years, a new iPhone model typically included modest updates from its predecessor but one of the most significant changes was always the processor. This was reassuring for customers because it meant that their new iPhone would probably be able to run iOS updates for a longer period of time. However, with the iPhone 14, it’s not as clear if this will still be the case. However, with the iPhone 14, it’s not as clear if this will still be the case. Even though the A15 is still a great processor, it’s not just about having the newest one. It also presumably has something to do with how many OS updates a phone gets and whether it will support certain new features that Apple adds to iOS over the next few years. In the past, even when there weren’t huge differences between iPhone models, getting that current-gen chipset was still a good reason to buy the latest model — if nothing else, you’d probably get OS upgrades for a longer period of time. But with the iPhone 14, that doesn’t seem as certain.

Iphone 14 & 14 PRO Camera Review

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 13, the new iPhone 14 comes with 15W MagSafe charging, IP68 water resistance, and storage options of 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB. The U.S. version of the 14 also supports both sub-6GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) 5G networks whereas the international version is limited to sub-6GHz only; however, this shouldn’t pose much of an issue for most people since the US is the only country that acts like it cares about mmWave technology. You’ll see a mmWave window on the side of the phone if you have the US version, but one thing you won’t spot on that model is a physical SIM tray — it’s all eSIM, baby. More on that later. There’s Wi-Fi 6 support, as there was in the 13, and Bluetooth has been upgraded from 5.0 to 5.3. The iPhone 14’s screen is everything that the 13’s is — because for all intents and purposes, it’s the same display. It’s still a 6.1-inch OLED with a little better than 1080p resolution (Super Retina XDR if you’re fluent in Apple) with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. It’s a good screen, but the competition is running laps around Apple here. Android phones from the flagship class all the way to the $350 Samsung A53 5G offer screens with 120Hz refresh rates. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s an area where it feels like the standard iPhone is overdue for an update. For the super-smooth 120Hz ProMotion display, you still need to pony up for the Pro model. Iphone 14 & 14 PRO Battery Reviews

Battery life is always something people look for when a new model comes out, and the iPhone 14 does not disappoint. With 20 hours of video playback (as opposed to 19 on the iPhone 13), this phone will easily last most people throughout the day. I put it to the test by using it for three to four hours straight and found that I still had 40 to 50 percent battery life left at the end of the day. This is a great improvement from the iPhone 13 and will surely be a selling point for many people.

Battery life is one aspect that I looked forward to seeing year-over-year improvement in a new flagship model, and in this department, Apple does quote a small increase in performance. The 14 will get up to 20 hours of video playback versus 19 on the iPhone 13, according to the official specs. In the real world, after three to four hours of screen-on time, I had between 40 and 50 percent charge at the end of the day. Whether that’s substantially better than the already quite excellent iPhone 13 is hard to say, but it’s good enough to get most people through a full day, and that’s what counts.

So far, I’ve mostly talked about what hasn’t changed, so here’s what’s new.

The new iPhone 14 comes with some life-saving features, including Crash Detection and high dynamic range gyroscopic sensor. With these new features, the 14 is able to detect if you’ve been in a crash and call emergency services if you don’t respond in time. The iPhone 13 review doesn’t have these new sensors, so it’s unlikely that older phones would be able to support Crash Detection. Apple is touting the iPhone 14’s new hardware features as literal lifesavers. The first is Crash Detection, which looks very similar to Google’s car crash detection. The 14 has a new “high dynamic range” gyroscopic sensor and a high-g accelerometer. If data collected by the phone’s sensors indicate that you’ve been in a crash, it will ask you if you’re okay and will call emergency services if you don’t respond in a certain amount of time. The iPhone 13 doesn’t have those new sensors, so it’s unlikely that older phones would be able to support Crash Detection.

I can’t say for sure that the phone’s emergency crash response feature works because I haven’t been in a car accident during the week that I’ve been testing it. I’ll leave that to the more courageous testers, but in any case, it’s something that just happens on the phone and doesn’t require the user to do anything to enable it. It’s a nice-to-have feature, plain and simple. I haven’t had the opportunity to test the phone’s crash protection feature in the week that I’ve been testing it, so I can’t attest to its efficacy. I’ll leave that to gutsier testers than me, but in any case, it’s something that just happens on the phone and doesn’t require anything of the user to enable. It’s the definition of a nice-to-have feature.

The 14 also has Emergency SOS, a separate service that’s coming this November. In areas without cell coverage, the phone is able to get a message out to emergency responders by communicating via satellite. This is thanks to some custom components and software unique to the iPhone 14 series, according to Apple’s launch presentation, so don’t expect to see it ported to older models either.

You’ll answer a few questions to help emergency services better understand your situation, and the UI directs you to point your phone at the nearest satellite. Once you’ve done that, the satellite will relay your location and other information to emergency services.

When you use Emergency SOS, you’ll answer a few questions to help emergency services better understand your situation. The UI will then direct you to point your phone at the nearest satellite.

I got a demo of the feature on Apple’s Cupertino campus. It looked fairly intuitive. You can see the satellite’s position changing on your phone screen as it crosses the sky. According to Apple’s documentation, sending a message can take anywhere from 15 seconds to “over a minute” depending on how much your view of the satellite is obstructed. In a spot with some light foliage, messages in my demo went through in less than 30 seconds. Demoing the new feature to me, I got to see it first hand on an iPhone on Apple’s Cupertino campus. Even though it wasn’t in an ideal testing ground, it still looked fairly promising. You can even see the satellite’s position changing on your phone screen as it crosses the sky. If you often find yourself in areas with weak or no cell coverage, then satellite SOS could be a lifesaver. I do a lot of hiking around the Seattle area, and it doesn’t take long to find yourself in a spot where you can’t get a signal. That can be dangerous if you get lost or hurt on a less-traveled trail. I’m not a serious enough hiker to invest in a separate GPS unit and its subscription service, but having this feature built into my phone is very appealing.

Agree to Continue: Apple iPHONE 14 and 14 Pro

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we’re going to start counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

To use any of the iPhone 14 models, you have to agree to:

  • The iOS terms and conditions, which you can have sent to you by email
  • Apple’s warranty agreement, which you can have sent to you by email

These agreements are nonnegotiable, and you cannot use the phone at all if you don’t agree to them.

The iPhone also prompts you to set up Apple Cash and Apple Pay at setup, which further means you have to agree to:

  • The Apple Cash agreement, which specifies that services are actually provided by Green Dot Bank and Apple Payments, Inc. and further consists of the following agreements:
  • The Apple Cash terms and conditions
  • The electronic communications agreement
  • The Green Dot Bank privacy policy
  • Direct payments terms and conditions
  • Direct payments privacy notice
  • Apple Payments, Inc. license

If you add a credit card to Apple Pay, you have to agree to:

  • The terms from your credit card provider, which do not have an option to be emailed
  • Final tally: two mandatory agreements, six optional agreements for Apple Cash, and one optional agreement for Apple Pay.
